Educating Doctors, Providers and Trainees

My Qualifications as a Physician, Educator, and Speaker

I completed medical school at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and went on to a combined medicine/pediatrics residency at Indiana University.  During residency as my health deteriorated, I took a year off to get my health in order and I dropped pediatrics.  I completed a fellowship at Duke University in pulmonary/critical care medicine and went on to work for the Department of Surgery in their surgical intensive care unit/trauma ICU/kidney/liver transplant unit.

My research interests have been in medical education and patient safety, including best ways to educate students, use of competency based education, simulation, interprofessional education.  I was the Assistant Dean of Clinical Education at Duke University prior to retiring and led the Section on Medical Education for the American Thoracic Society.  My students and peers have acknowledged my efforts with the Master Clinician Teaching Award, the Golden Apple Teaching Award and the ATS created a young educator award named after me.

I have spoken at several institutions to students, residents, fellows and faculty to share my patient experiences and medical education research while providing insights about how we can change our practices to improve care, including:  National Institutes of Health, Henry Ford University, Western Michigan University School of Medicine, University of Iowa, MedStar, Oregon Health Sciences University, Duke University, Medicare/CMS, Dell Medical School, the American Thoracic Society, The Society of Critical Care Medicine, and the Association of Medicine and Psychiatry.
